Instead of washing your grease down the drain, participate in the Holiday Grease Roundup and recycle it for free!
The City of Allen encourages you to properly recycle grease/cooking oil and divert as much grease as possible from our pipes this season. Held in partner with the North Central Texas Council of Governments, the Holiday Grease Roundup kicks off Nov. 22 and ends Jan. 10.
Why shouldn't I pour grease/cooking oil down the drain?
When fats, oils, and grease are washed down the drain, they stick to the inside of pipes, hardening and building up until they cause clogs and sewer backups. This can lead to sewage overflow into homes, streets and local waterways. If the sewer overflows, City crews have to shut down streets, tying up traffic and increasing expenses for both residents and municipalities. Whether the repairs are in your home or in the street, it can be costly and inconvenient.
How should I dispose of my grease/cooking oil?
Allen residents can dispose of household grease by scheduling a curbside pickup using the MyAllen Request Center or by calling Community Services at 214.509.4551.
What happens to grease collected during the roundup?
The collected cooking oil and grease is recycled into biodiesel or biogas for energy production. This reduces landfill waste and produces an alternative fuel that’s clean and green. Learn about other disposal opportunities at CityofAllen.org/HHW.
