[ARCHIVED] Allen Public Library highlights successes in 2020

Allen Public Library (APL) successfully modified its services to accommodate the timely changes of 2020. Library Board Chair Scott Phillips gave APL’s annual report to Council in March.

Prior to COVID-19 closures, APL achieved a 100% increase in circulation and 200% increase in program attendance from 2009-2019. In 2019, APL transitioned to CloudLibrary as its source for digital content. The platform brought a 30% increase in new users in January with over 3,500 new patrons added during the year. Between October 2019 and March 2020, APL completed over 479 programs.

New strategy in 2020
As closures began, APL turned its attention to transforming in-person programs into virtual presentations. The Library launched an online registration for temporary cards, and patrons enjoyed flexible curbside pickup service with 52,712 checkouts logged for the year.

In 2020, APL staff conducted 259 virtual programs with over 17,000 patrons in virtual attendance. This year APL earned the Branding Iron Award Honorable Mention from Texas Library Association, and, for the seventh consecutive year, the Achievement of Excellence in Libraries Award from Texas Municipal Library Directors Association.

The Library reopened last summer with limited hours, capacity, and services. APL still offers curbside service.
