[ARCHIVED] City Council approves maintenance contract for Allen’s shared public safety radio system

Allen City Council authorized a five-year maintenance agreement with Motorola Solutions for the shared public safety radio system jointly owned by the Cities of Allen and Plano. The $1.4 million investment, budgeted over five years, covers Allen’s portion of operational costs, maintenance and new service features.

The service agreement includes annual maintenance for the radio transmission equipment at Rowlett Tower as well as for the hundreds of Motorola radios used by public safety and general government staff. Automatic upgrades will be made to the radio tower as older equipment ages and newer technology becomes available. These maintenance and upgrade services are available only through Motorola.

The joint radio system serves multiple entities including Collin County, Plano ISD and various local cities that share operational costs. The shared services model provides a superior level of services at a lower cost compared to if Allen attempted to build a similar system as a lone city.

“With this multi-year maintenance agreement, Allen can better predict annual costs to maintain our excellent public safety and general government radio system in partnership with Plano,” said Eric Matthews, City of Allen IT director.

The maintenance agreement continues a 24-year partnership between City of Allen and City pf Plano.
