[ARCHIVED] IRS Scam Callers on the Rise - Hang UP then Report IT!

irs scam alert

Allen Police warn residents that IRS impersonators have changed their tactics in order to trick people into sending payment to iTunes and other types of gift cards. It's a scam - do not give them any information, hang up, then report the crime.

TIGTA (Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration) warns that callers impersonating Internal Revenue Service (IRS) or Treasury Department employees are demanding payments not only on iTunes Gift Cards but on other gift cards such as Green Dot Prepaid Cards, MoneyPak Prepaid Cards, Reloadit Prepaid Debit Cards, and other prepaid credit cards. These are fraudulent calls.

No legitimate United States Treasury or IRS official will demand that payments via Western Union, MoneyGram, bank wire transfers, or bank deposits be made into another person’s account for any debt to the IRS or Treasury. Hang up on these fraudulent callers and go to the TIGTA scam reporting page to report the call.

You can also report this type of scam activity or identity theft to the Allen Police Department. You can find more information at AllenPolice.org/IdentityTheft.
