Allen ISD students head back to class on Monday, Aug. 22. Here are five things to know as you prepare for a new year:
#1 – Save money on clothes, shoes and school supplies during Tax Free Weekend, Aug. 5-7. The statewide tax holiday brings a lot of traffic to Allen shopping hubs, such as Allen Premium Outlets, Village at Allen and Watters Creek. Look for additional coupons on Shop Across Allen, a service provided by the Allen Convention and Visitors Bureau.
#2 – Brush up on school bus safety. Do you have to stop for a school bus any time you see the flashing lights? Review the rules with this helpful infographic. Drivers who violate Texas laws about school buses could face up to $1,250 in fines.
#3 – Help local students. Allen Community Outreach will hold its annual Fill the Bus school supply drive August 1-9. Here's the list of needed supplies and drop-off locations.
#4 – Get back into a routine. Find a fitness class or sports league by browsing the latest Parks & Recreation Fall Guide. Allen residents can register for programs beginning Aug. 8 at 8 a.m. Non-residents may register beginning Aug. 10 at 8 a.m.
#5 – Improve your study habits. Allen Public Library offers many resources to help students succeed, from computers and printing services to group study rooms. Anyone who lives in Texas can get a library card with Allen Public Library. (Lost yours? Replacements are only $2.)
