Auditions for Gladys in Wonderland

Monday, September 23, 2013

Allen's Community Theatre is holding open auditions for its next play: Gladys in Wonderland by by Rosemary Frisino Toohey.

Directed by Robin Coulonge, ACT Board Member, the auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. Everyone is encouraged to bring a head-shot and resume and, if possible, a prepared, one-minute comedic monologue.

The play will run Friday and Saturday, Nov. 1, 2, 8 and 9 with two shows on the 9th. All shows are at 8 pm with the Saturday, November 9 matinee at 3 p.m.

The casting is flexible. Please contact Robin at for sides and to reserve your audition spot.

Here is a bit about the play: 87-year-old Gladys' days of munching donuts and scouring the obituaries seem numbered when Death himself comes knocking on her door one morning. Ready to whisk her off into the great unknown, her cheerful grim reaper is startled by Gladys' stubborn refusal to expire. In order to push Gladys toward the light, he ushers in a parade of obnoxious friends and relatives who nitpick and whine. He also gives her a taste of nursing home life from an inmate's point of view. Suddenly, the afterlife doesn't look so bad...

Characters include:

Gladys Overmeyer (87)- somewhat disheveled in appearance. She has “good days” and “bad days”, though her mental state is more eccentric than senile.
Doris- Gladys’ daughter
Mort- An unexpected visitor in white suit (angel of death)
Frank- Gladys’ younger brother
Karen- Gladys’ grand niece
Dennis- meal deliverer
Henry- Gladys’ nephew
Mildred – Gladys’ best friend
Lillian & Ethel – nursing home residents
Myrna- Frank’s second wife
