Communications / Dispatch Unit
Overview
Communications Unit
The Communications Unit is one of the most vital services for the police and fire departments and is also known as the life line of the department. The Communications Unit provides emergency and non-emergency service dispatching to the citizens of Allen on a 24 hour basis.

Communications Technicians
Communications technicians are the critical link between the citizens in need and the responding personnel. Emergency and non-emergency calls for assistance are received through ‘Enhanced 9-1-1’ and non-emergency phone lines.

Hearing Impaired
Communications technicians also assist the hearing-impaired callers through the Telephone Devise for the Deaf (TDD) phone line. They provide reassurance and understanding to the citizen in need when an emergency occurs.

Warrant Checks
In addition, communications technicians also check persons for warrants and criminal histories, as well as property to determine if it is stolen by utilizing the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and the Texas Crime Information Center (TCIC) database.

Becoming a Communication Technician
Communication technicians or dispatchers are non-sworn staff that work in the Communications Division to provide services for both our Police and Fire departments. Dispatchers are the critical link between the citizens in need and responding personnel.

Visit Human Resources and check job descriptions to view the essential functions and eligibility requirements of a communication technician. Check employment opportunities for open positions and to submit an application.
