Communications/Dispatch Unit

dispatch unitThe Communications Unit is one of the most vital services for the police and fire departments and is also known as the life line of the department. The Communications Unit provides emergency and non-emergency service dispatching to the citizens of Allen on a 24 hour basis.

Communications technicians are the critical link between the citizens in need and the responding personnel. Emergency and non-emergency calls for assistance are received through ‘Enhanced 9-1-1’ and non-emergency phone lines.

Communications technicians also assist the hearing-impaired callers through the Telephone Devise for the Deaf (TDD) phone line. They provide reassurance and understanding to the citizen in need when an emergency occurs.

In addition, communications technicians also check persons for warrants and criminal histories, as well as property to determine if it is stolen by utilizing the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and the Texas Crime Information Center (TCIC) database.

Staffing of the Communications Unit consists of eleven (11) authorized civilian positions who are trained in a four phase in-house training program.
