Summer Burn Safety

Summer is well under way and it is time for many of us to enjoy annual summer vacations, fireworks displays and various types of outdoor recreation. Much of our summer fun can make for a busy time of year for emergency personnel and burn treatment specialists if we are not careful. Whether we hit the beach, camp in the woods, attend outdoor festivals or simply barbecue in our backyards, summer burn safety should be an essential part of planning our activities.

The American Burn Association Burn Prevention Committee wants the public to be informed about the various risks associated with “warm weather activities.” Burn specialists care for over 600,000 burn injuries per year. This figure counts only those injuries reported to emergency personal or physicians. Many victims of burn injuries attempt self-treatment and go unreported. From sunburn to outdoor cooking and hazards while traveling away from home, there are many simple, routine measures we can take to prevent or limit the injury related to burns and fire.

Be sure to check the Public Education Safety web page for information on a variety of fire and life safety issues. The Home Safety Council also provides a wealth of safety information, family and children's activities on related issues through out the year. A new feature on the Home Safety Council's website includes a virtual home safety tour. This is a great way to safeguard all aspects of your home. Children will enjoy the interactive tour while learning important information.
