Overdrive using the Kindle Reading App or Kindle Cloud Reader

You can use the Kindle app to borrow and enjoy eBooks and audiobooks.

What you need



  • A Kindle reading app or Kindle Cloud Reader (Apple computer, Windows Computer, or Chromebook) for your device.
  • An Amazon account.

How to borrow and deliver Kindle Books

Follow the steps below to borrow Kindle Books and deliver them to your Kindle reading app or Kindle Cloud Reader.

  1. Open Allen Public Library's OverDrive website.
  2. Find a Kindle Book to borrow.  You can:
    • Tap or click a title to go to its detals page.  The details page lists the formats available for that title, including Kindle book (if available.  Note:  Some Kindle books (including many picture books, read-alongs, and graphic novels) are not supported on certain Kindle reading apps.  To check if an eBook has Kindle app restrictions, look for a Kindle restrictions link under "Available formats
    • Run a search, then narrow your results by selecting Kindle Book under the "eBook" filter.
    • Use the advanced search and choose Kindle Book in the "Formats" drop-down menu.
  3. Once you find an eBook that's available as a Kindle Book, select Borrow.  If prompted, sign in using the 14-digit number on the back of your library card (no spaces).  You PIN is the last 4 digits of the phone number you used to sign up for your card.  Note:  You do not need to create an account with OverDrive.  Your library card number and PIN are all you need.  You may check the box to save your library card to your account.  By doing this, you will only have to enter your PIN each time you log in.
  4. Go to your Loans page (under My Account > Loans). From there, select Choose a format, then Kindle Book.
    You'll be taken to Amazon's website to complete checkout and send the eBook to your Kindle reading app or Kindle Cloud Reader.  If you're already signed into Amazon, continue to step 5.  If you're not signed into Amazon, skip to step 6.
  5. If you're signed into Amazon, select a reading app from the "Deliver to:" drop-down menu, then select Get library book.  The book will be sent to your Kindle reading app, and you'll find it on your app's home screen.  Note:  You must complete this step for the library book you borrowed to show up in your "Manage Your Content and Devices" list in your Amazon account.  If the library book does not appear in this list, you won't be able to download it on any device.
  6. If you're not already signed into Amazon, select Get library book.  You will be prompted to sign in.
  7. After signing in, a page will open where you can select the reading app where you'd link to send the book you borrowed.  Select Continue.
Note:  You must complete this step for the library book you borrowed to show up in the "Manage Your Content and Devices" list in your Amazon account.  If the library book does not appear in this list, you won't be able to download it on any device.

Note:  Library books require a Wi-Fi connection for download to Kindle devices or apps.  If you do not have an available Wi-Fi connection, you will need to transfer the title via USB.

Once a Book is on your Kindle reading app or Kindle Cloud Reader, open it form your app's home screen to begin reading.  If you want to read the eBook on a different Kindle device or app, you can download it again during the lending period.
