How to borrow and deliver Kindle Books

Follow the steps below to borrow Kindle Books and deliver them to your Kindle.

  1. Use a computer, tablet, or smartphone to open Allen Public Library's OverDrive website.
  2. Find a Kindle Book to borrow.  You can:
    • Tap or click a title to go to its details page.  The detail page lists the formats available for that title, including Kindle Book (if available).  Note:  Some Kindle Books (including many picture books, read-alongs, and graphic novels) are not supported on certain Kindle devices.  To check if an eBook has Kindle device restrictions, looks for a Kindle restrictions link under "Available formats."
    • Run a search, then narrow your results by selecting Kindle Book under the "eBook" filter.
    • Use the advanced search and choose Kindle Book in the "Formats" drop-down menu.
  3. Once you find an eBook that's available as a Kindle Book, select Borrow.  Sign in using the 14-digit number on the back of your library card (no spaces).  Your PIN is the last 4 digits of the phone number you used to sign up for your card.  Note: You do not need to create an account with OverDrive.  Your library card number and pin are all you need.
  4. Once you have borrowed an eBook, go to your Loans page (under My account > Loans).  From there, select Choose a format, then Kindle Book.  You'll be taken to Amazon's website to complete checkout and send the eBook to your Kindle device or reading app. If you're already signed into Amazon, continue to step 5.  If you're not signed into Amazon, skip to step 6.
  5. If you're signed into Amazon, select a device or reading app from the "Deliver to:" drop-down menu, then select Get Library book. The book will be sent to your Kindle device, and you'll find it on your device's home screen.  Note:  You must complete this step for the library book you borrowed to show up in your "Manage Your Content and Devices" list in your Amazon account.  If the library book does not appear in this list, you won't be able to download it on any device.
  6. If you're not already signed into Amazon, select Get library book.  You will be prompted to sign in.
  7. After signing in, a page will open where you can select the device where you'd like to send the book you've borrowed.
    Select Continue.
