CAD Submittals

The Allen Fire Department has recently implemented a Computer Aided Design (CAD) plan submittal program. This program was created to save you and the Fire Department time, money and storage space.

The current plan review and permit application fees will apply. Permit fees are due at time of submittal along with permit application. A permit is not issued until plans have been approved. Approved plans must be on site. Working without a permit or approved plans will result in a fine.

The Allen Fire Department will accept plans via CAD for:
  • Fire Alarm Systems
  • Fire Sprinkler Systems
  • Hood Exhaust Extinguishing System
  • Underground Fire Mains
  • Underground Storage Tanks
Please note that at this time building plan reviews for building permits issued by the Allen Building Department and Civil Engineering are not being accepted by the Fire Department.

DWG Integrity
Concerns have been voiced on the integrity of the original drawing. The software that the Allen Fire Department uses only allows the viewing, measuring and redlining of the drawings. This is down by the creation of overlays and will not affect the original drawing. Therefore, the original drawings can only be changed by the plan designer.

CAD submittals will be provided to the Allen Fire Department by:
  • Disk: CD-RW
  • Email: If emailing the files please send as a “zip” file
Format must be compatible to CAD 2000 or earlier versions.

Product specifications, hydraulic calcs and battery calcs may be submitted in a .doc, .pdf or .txt format. If unable to send these via email in these formats you may send hard copies to the Fire Marshal's Office.

Permit Application & Fees
Permit Application must accompany plans. Permit applications can be printed from our website or picked up at Fire Administration Offices. Application should be faxed, mailed or delivered in person to the Fire Marshal's Office.

Permit Fees must be paid at time of submittal. This may be accomplished via US Mail, Overnight or by courier.

Mark-ups will be created on an overlay and saved as “fdmarkup (1,2,3, etc.).red”

Comments may be sent in two (2) different formats:
  • Overlay - Comments will be created as an overlay. Comments shall be printed on the construction set of plans.
  • Word or PDF - Comments must be kept with approved plans.
Approvals of submitted plans will be noted on the comments or markup overlay. The Phrase “AFD APPROVED” will be added to the comments. Plans are not considered approved until this phrase is place on to the approved plans. As with paper submittal, all plan approvals are subject to field verification.

Return of Fire Department Review
Comment, markup and approval overlays will be sent to you via email or provided on a disk for pick-up at the Allen Fire Department Administrative Offices. The Fire Department will not mail disk.

Placing Mark-ups, Comments and Approval on Plans
During trial runs of this program, we have determined the following procedure to be the easiest way to “attach” the redlines on your plans.

The Allen Fire Department will provide you with the overlay as a .red. Once you receive this file, convert it in your CAD program to a .dwg. This will allow you to over lay the file to your plans.

Re-Submittal / Mark-up Changes
Follow submittal process: except, send only the overlay(s) in which the changes have been made.
